The Declaration

What is Scaithe?

Scaithe™ is an exclusive monthly email newsletter of system-neutral, grimdark hooks, relics, and encounters. Inspired by old-school campaigns, books and zines, it is written for DMs, GMs, and lore-keepers who dwell in the shadows and sewers of despairing worlds.

Expect neither mercy nor triumph. Scaithe™ speaks of truths buried beneath altars and bones, of relics dredged from cursed soil, tales pulled from the mouths of the dying, and encounters etched by the trembling hands of those who have seen too much.

Each Issue holds:

- A setting steeped in woe and despair.

- Plot hooks ripe with treachery and lies.

- Encounter seeds and NPC's.

- Tainted Relics and 'rewards'.

Scaithe™ is supplied as a PDF for screen, as well as a variant for printing at home (Print. Staple. Done.).

What's Inside

This is the anatomy of a Scaithe™
issue; the included sections and their purpose.

01. Setting

The lay of the land. A short account of the place or event. Use this to ground your players in atmosphere and rumour.

02. The Hook

The spark that draws the party in, the visible symptom of a deeper wound. Defines the core problem, mystery, or threat.

03. Themes

A handful of words and phrases to guide tone, music, and mood. Use them to tune your narration, lighting, or NPC voices.

04. Rumours & Whispers

Fragments of hearsay and superstition. Each can seed a side quest, NPC confession, or tavern tale.

05. Encounters & Dangers

Moments of tension: sights, scenes, or discoveries that push the story forward. They may not all be combat, some will unleash dread, revelation, or choice.

06. The Truths

Here lies what the players are not meant to know: the hidden lore, origin, or consequence behind the Hook. For the Gamekeeper’s eyes only.

07. Key NPC's

Names, traits, and frailties. Each written to serve as both clue and complication. Adjust manner and motive as your table or campaign demands.

08. Relics & Remnants

Artifacts, treasures, or cursed relics uncovered in the tale. Every one may bear either a boon or price, sometimes both.

Using Scaithe

Each Scaithe™ entry can be played as a single, stand-alone mystery (One Shot, or Sidequest), a recurring subplot, or a regional legend woven into your campaign’s wider, existing lore.

Content is written system-neutral for ease of grafting onto any dark fantasy engine. Mechanics may be added or removed freely; the horror and despair however, is constant.

Advice from The Scrivener: Do not explain the darkness. Let it breathe. Let the table find its own pattern in the murk. A little silence feeds more dread than any rulebook ever could.
